EDITORIAL: In this number you will find the first of a new regular feature: the zuihitsu column by Gina Collia-Suzuki. 'Zuihitsu' means 'following the brush', the term covers miscellaneous writings of many kinds. Gina's zuihitsu will be about aspects of daily life that may be encountered in prints. These are, of course, not only works of art but also historical documents that tell us a lot about the society that produced them. We believe Gina's brief but informative contributions will surprise and delight you all. This issue further contains an account by Ton and Mies Becker of their attempts to interpret the scene depicted on a manju netsuke in their possession. David Pollack discusses the rise of the large-format triptych, and Matthi Forrer explores the relationship between the ever-enigmatic Sharaku and his publisher Tsutaya Jūsaburō. Dave van Eijnsbergen's article on the architecture of the Taishō era provides a link with the international conference on the art of that period that will take place in January 2013.
