EDITORIAL: It is a pleasant task to write a short introduction to this first issue of Andon, a new quarterly, published by the Society for Japanese Arts and Crafts. I hope it will fulfil the often uttered wishes of not a few members in Holland and abroad to receive more comprehensive in formation on subjects and events in the field of Japansese art. In our Newsletter of June 1980 (no. 118) the readers were invited to suggest a name for a new quarterly. We have to express our special thanks to Mr. William Green, West Islip, N.Y., U.S.A. who sent us a design, showing a Chinese lantern and the name: 'The Lantern, shedding light on Japanese Art'. As our publication will deal with the art of Japan, the name 'Andon' (the typical Japanese paper-covered lamp) recommended by Willem van Gulik seemed more appropriate, but we gladly took over Mr. Green's idea of a lamp 'Shedding light on Japanese Art'. The Andon as we find it illustrated in many prints of Harunobu, Utamaro and their contemporaties was an oil lamp. Happily for the fuel of our Andon we depend only to a minimal degree on the whirns of Arab Sheiks; our lamp will shine brightly, if the members of the Society generously supply it with their 'spiritual' products. I sincerely hope that they will not hide their light under a bushel, but wil! provide theAndon with plenty of 'oH'. As for the contents of our quarterly we aim at publishing essays on all the various domains of Japanse art and related subjects of the culture of Japan, if possible with good illustrations, furthermore bookreviews, reports on symposia, lectures and exhibitions; if these may lead to differences of opinion, we will not shun discussions. Also we intend to insert translations of some interesting articles, published in Dutch language in the Bulletins of our Society in the forties and fifties. This first issue of Andon is published under the responsibility of the Board of our Society. Henceforth all the entries will be submitted to examination by a Board of Editors. Their names will be published in our Newsletter in due course. We owe a debt of sincere gratitude to Mrs. Alice Horodisch-Garman, who made the titledesign, showing an andon and the well known flower-mon of the Society.
