EDITORIAL: The present issue of 'Andon' is largely devoted to Charles Mitchell, an American resident in Japan for many years, who this year celebrates his 75th birthday. For this occasion, both Jack Hillier and Richard Lane have contributed a personal view, whereas Robert Vergez and Frederick Roach wrote on Kiyochika's cartoons and Nagasaki prints respectively, both their contributions being dedicated to Charles. For many of us, Charles Mitchell has always been one of the great letter-writers and corresponding with him is both a great pleasure and a great privilege. For me, only knowing him through correspondence, he has in this way become one of my best friends. l am convinced that many share this experience.
