EDITORIAL: Hiraga Gennai is one of the most intriguing characters in Japanese history. Because of his wide interests in many fields, students of various disciplines are bound to encounter him in their studies. Allen Hockley investigates Gennai's development and the possibilities of a direct contact with Suzuki Harunobu's circles. The front cover of this issue features a lacquer box by Ogawa Shōmin, an artist whose oeuvre is further investigated by Jan Dees. In his contribution, Dees tries to link a number of unsigned works to this lacquer-restorer who, quite naturally, finds much of his inspiration in the past. Ellis Tinios has been a regular contributor to Andon, usually informing us about the results of his Kunisada studies. In this issue he presents a little-known or, at least, neglected source-book by Toyokuni, Kunisada's teacher.
