EDITORIAL: In a world so full of anger, hatred and violence it seems senseless to discuss beautiful works of art. Can we carry on with our lives as we did before the attacks in America of 11 September took place? With all the shocking images engraved on my mind I am lost for words. Discussing the new manuscripts offered to Andon for publication with my fellow members of the editorial board has always given us the idea that in a sense we contributed to a better understanding of another culture. Now that we have again seen the consequences of hatred and ignorance, I hope, perhaps against my better judgement, that communicating about art, which reflects the inner feelings of a culture in many ways, might contribute in a humble way to a better understanding among people. May this issue of Andon focusing on lacquerware by Susanne Barchalia and on pipe cases by Jan Dees and Arisumi Mitamura, bring you some consolation and courage in these uncertain times.
