Shimaoka Tatsuzo,島岡達三 (Japan, 1919-2007)

Glazed square stoneware plate, rope impressed with inlaid slip and trailed glaze design. Signed “Ta” (タ) on the bottom.

With signed and sealed original box. Text on the inside of the lid reads: A glazed square stoneware plate with “zōgan” inlaid work.

Including wrapping cloth.

*Shimaoka Tatsuzo graduated from the Ceramics Department of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and moved to the town of Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture, where from 1946-1949 he became a pupil of Hamada Shoji (1894-1978). He developed a personal style by applying the technique of rope-impressed inlay decoration. He inherited the Mingei (or Folk Art) spirit from Hamada Shoji and his work shows an extraordinary combination of rope-impressed inlay and glazing of mainly earth tones. Some items have overglaze enamel designs in green and yellow. In 1966 he was named Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).

JAPAN – XXth century

Takamitsu 隆光 (n.d.) 

Small lacquer suzuribako, with white lacquer background from titanium. Decorated with red rhododendron, with black and golden leaves. Black lacquer interior, decorated with sprinkled golden nashiji. Inner lid is signed Takamitsu. 

With original box, on the lid is written shakunage (rhododendron). Inner lid is signed by the artist, with seal.
